There are two things that I believe you can always count on in education: No. 1 – what we do matters and is critical. No. 2 - there will always be change. These two apply this year at Decatur ISD. I am thrilled for the opportunity to serve as your Interim Superintendent.
A bit about myself. I have been a teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent since 1983. I have served in elementary, middle, and high schools and as superintendent of a district with 63 campuses with a $500 million budget. Throughout my career, my motivation has always been to do what was right for kids. I believe my passion, my dedication to the students in the great State of Texas and my breadth of experience provide the background to be the best person for this transition in the life of DISD schools. You can rest assured that while I am here in a short-term capacity that every decision I make will be focused on longevity and sustainability here in Decatur. I take this opportunity very seriously.
Decatur ISD is to be commended for all it provides for students: a wealth of career and technical education courses; dual-language kindergarten; dual enrollment and Advanced Placement courses for high school students to earn college credit; competitive athletics, academic and fine arts teams; 98.1 percent graduation rate; and one-to-one computing devices K-12.
Decatur is a good district, but we can be great. Like many communities that are on the outskirts of major metropolitan communities across the country, the landscape of the communities is changing, the demographics of the communities are changing and consequently, schools are changing. The key to success in DISD is relationships. This is a wonderful community, full of passionate folks who want the best for the students we serve. Collectively, I know we can get it done.
I can't wait to see the results of a collaborative, collective effort that is aligned and strategically focused on the items that will have the greatest impact on student achievement!
