Decatur ISD has tapped Tammy Allen as the new principal for Decatur High School. Allen, currently the high school’s associate principal of academics and instruction, will take the reins on July 1, pending formal ratification by the DISD Board of Trustees on June 16.
A dedicated educator with 18 years of experience, including three years in administrative service at Decatur High School, Allen boasts a proven track record in instructional leadership, student success, new teacher mentorship, and effective organizational management. She succeeds Lyle Lackey, who will become the district's new assistant superintendent of human resources on July 1.
“We are incredibly excited to welcome our new high school principal, Tammy Allen, a leader whose heart for students and passion for learning is matched by her deep understanding of instruction, systems, and the work it takes to move a campus forward,” said Superintendent Taylor Williams. “She not only knows how to build academic growth through rigor and accountability, but she also knows us—our story, our strengths, and the areas we’re ready to grow. Her belief in what’s possible for our students and staff makes this a truly special moment for our school community."
Allen's extensive career began as a 5th-grade English and social studies teacher in Denton ISD. She spent 15 years in various teaching and leadership roles within Denton schools before joining Decatur ISD.
"I am profoundly honored and humbled to embark on this new chapter," said Allen. "Having been part of the DHS family, I am deeply committed to building upon the DHS legacy of excellence – ensuring every student feels valued, challenged, and empowered to achieve their full potential. I look forward to working hand-in-hand with our dedicated staff, supportive families, and incredible students to continue building an exceptional learning community."
Allen is involved in several professional organizations: the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TAASP), the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA), and the Texas Council of Women School Executives (TCWSE). She is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Abilene Christian University with expected completion in Fall 2025, and holds a Master of Education from Abilene Christian University and a bachelor’s degree from Texas Woman’s University.
She has been married to her husband, David, for 29 years and has three adult sons. Originally from South Florida, the family moved to North Texas just over 20 years ago but still enjoys a good beach trip for a summer break. When not working, Allen can usually be found with a book in her hand while sitting outside enjoying the sunshine.
