The hallways of Decatur ISD were filled with cheers, confetti, and oversized checks this March as the Decatur ISD Education Foundation completed its annual “Grant Giveaway” tour.
In a whirlwind week of celebration, the Foundation’s Surprise Squad visited all six district campuses, awarding nearly $90,000 in innovative teaching grants to educators.
Leading the way, Decatur's Big Blue Marching Band drum line announced the arrival of grant checks throughout each building.
This year’s total represents a significant investment in the future of Decatur’s students, with funds touching every corner of the district—from kindergarten literacy programs to advanced high school vocational shops.
Empowering Innovation
The primary goal of the Education Foundation is to provide funding for projects that fall outside the normal scope of the school district’s budget. This year’s recipients demonstrated incredible creativity in how they plan to engage students.
At Decatur High School and the Decatur Alternative Education Program, more than $30,000 was awarded to fuel high-level programs. Grants ranged from a $7,500 investment in theatre community connections to specialized "Forge the Future" tools and science equipment that allows for "Micro Exploration."
The momentum continued at McCarroll Middle School, where $19,431 was distributed for projects like the "Bright Futures Outdoors" initiative and "Mentor Book Clubs," which foster literacy and social connection during student lunch hours.
Impact at Every Level
The district’s elementary and STEM campuses also saw a massive influx of support:
Carson Elementary ($13,437): Funded a wide array of sensory tools and literacy "launchpads" to help the youngest learners find their footing.
Young Elementary ($12,285): Highlights included new garden accessibility and "Art on Display" showcase screens to elevate student creativity.
Enis (STEM) Elementary ($7,555): Teachers will now be able to lead students through advanced weather exploration and "Eagle Author" writing workshops.
Rann Elementary ($6,088): A standout grant, "The Big Pitch," will bring a "Shark Tank" style entrepreneurial competition to fifth graders.
Community-Powered Success
This year’s record-breaking impact was made possible by the unwavering support of the Decatur community. A major highlight was the success of the new Adopt-a-Grant program, which allowed individual donors and local businesses to choose and fund specific teacher requests directly.
"This is truly a community effort," said Monique Bird, executive director of the foundation. "From local businesses like Cardinal Paint and Medical City Decatur to families and individual donors, everyone stepped up to ensure our teachers have the tools they need to inspire."
The Education Foundation extends a heartfelt thank you to all its donors and the tireless educators who submitted grant applications.
As students head into Spring Break, they do so knowing that their classrooms are being transformed by a community that believes in their potential.
