Row of school buses

Decatur ISD is unveiling a new program designed to fast track new employees toward a career in school transportation.

The Community CDL B, P, S Certification Program is designed to help parents, guardians, and community members earn the necessary licensures to become certified school bus school drivers. The program's costs, covered fully by the district, are free to participants who join our team.

The initiative is a "really big move" for DISD's Department of Transpiration, said Kyle Mazac, executive director of maintenance and operations.

"We all know how vital school attendance is for the academic success of students, and our transportation team plays a critical role in the health of our school learning systems," said Mazac. "At a time when the need for drivers is greater than ever for many districts, our goal is to close this gap and connect with interested community members."

Among the perks for school bus employees, DISD is transitioning to a 4-day school week starting in the 2025–2026 academic year — however, bus drivers will still receive the same weekly rate as the drivers during the traditional, 5-day week.

This opportunity allows employees to:

  • Earn competitive pay, starting at $21.80/hour, with flexible scheduling options.

  • Receive fully covered CDL training, licensing , and endorsements.

  • Make a direct impact on DISD students’ education and well-being.

  • Support the local community by ensuring safe, reliable transportation.
